Currently, dementia has no cure, and treatment options remain limited. However, our groundbreaking research is on the verge of life-changing discoveries. Since 1998, we have invested over £150 million into more than 1,000 research projects. This incredible progress is only possible thanks to the generosity of supporters like you and the research you help fund.
Similar to how we safeguard other aspects of our health, we can take measures to maintain brain health and lower the risk of developing dementia in the future.
Genes influence our traits, including characteristics like eye color and height. In some instances, they can also influence whether we develop certain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. These genes are inherited from our parents.
These treatments are referred to as symptomatic treatments and include donepezil (a medicine from the cholinesterase inhibitor family) and memantine. Both are available through the NHS.
