Dementia is not a specific disease but rather a term used to describe a collection of symptoms that arise when brain cells no longer function properly. It can result from various diseases that affect the brain, each causing different types of dementia.
Most cases of dementia are caused by a mixture of risk factors. A risk factor is something that affects our chances of developing a condition like dementia. For most of us our risk of dementia is made up of our age, genes, lifestyle, health, and environment.
Similar to how we safeguard other aspects of our health, we can take measures to maintain brain health and lower the risk of developing dementia in the future.
Genes influence our traits, including characteristics like eye color and height. In some instances, they can also influence whether we develop certain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. These genes are inherited from our parents.
These treatments are referred to as symptomatic treatments and include donepezil (a medicine from the cholinesterase inhibitor family) and memantine. Both are available through the NHS.
